A Civilian's Thoughts on Honor, Perspective, Healing
A Civilian's Thoughts on Honor, Perspective, Healing:
Clovis Veterans Memorial Film Festival 2017
Writer:
Rachelle Bedwell
In drawing, an artist will use the concept of perspective by showing the position of objects in relationship to each other by incorporating height, depth, and width. Perspective shows a point of view and adds increased meaning.
I am a civilian. I have not served in the military. My two dimensional point of view on the military is drawn from history classes, books, documentaries, and movies with some essential depth added from veterans I know.
My uncle was with the Air Corps and trained pilots in the Chinese Air Force who flew with the Flying Tigers. He was killed in 1942 flying a DC-2 out of China. My father would tell me stories about “Scotty” which added color and meaning to my knowledge of the military and veterans.
My uncle showed me the bold shape of bravery flying on clandestine missions. He increased my understanding of sacrifice with his death: a dark stroke across the canvas.
Each line and shade that is added to my picture creates a clear portrait- HONOR. The high regard I feel for my uncle is felt for all who serve or who take the name “veteran”. Their stories are painted on neighboring canvas- touching my uncle Scotty and extending in all directions.
Each story brings a new perspective of meaning. A world of color: some deep and dark, some bright and vibrant, mixing to create a masterpiece. These masterpieces can bring healing: healing to the world, healing to the eyes that see, healing to the individual, and healing to me.
Come listen to and view these stories through film at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Film Festival. Understand the perspective, feel the honor, embrace the healing.
